Philippine Gampi
Very smooth, elegant surface. Good for printmaking, drawing and platinum printing.
The Torinoko (KH-29 Inomachi) paper made from Tosa Kozo came to life in the 1970’s.
The paper was mainly used abroad
for making prints, which they called “pearl paper”. This Torinoko paper
is said to have even been used by Chagal and Salvador Dali themselves
at the time.
Later on, the demand for a smoother surface grew, which led to the production of Gampi Torinoko (HP-70/71)
paper. This new paper had an extremely unique and fine texture, making
it highly suitable for producing detailed expressions on prints, and was
loved by many.
However in 2010, the only living maker of this beautiful paper (Mr.
Masao Seki) passed on; thus putting a stop on all production of Gampi
Torinoko paper. In order to make this paper, special facilities and
equipments are necessary such as a roller (pressing machine) and zinc
drying boards, so it is nearly impossible for other paper makers to
succeed after Mr. Seki. Currently, Mrs. Seki’s brother (Mr. Yoichi
Ieishi ) is diligently attempting to acquire the paper making skills to
keep the Gampi Torinoko legend alive. We have high hopes that this paper
will be restored very soon.
